More recent JB originals

Ever since I fell into the intstagram trap, I feel like I have had a real camera with me less and less on a day to day. Now that instagram is starting to suck more and more, I have been a lot more inclined to start carrying a real camera with me again. I have not regretted it. A lot of the stuff that I snapped is pure throw-away material. But I’m not sad about having shot it. These are a few of the snaps that I have come up with in the past couple of days, just from being out and about. I know that they aren’t anything amazing. But it just feels good to put down the phone and have a real camera in my hands on a daily basis, again.

NYC 150 1-second clips

I saw this video posted on like 10 of the sites that I read before I finally watched it. I’m sure glad that I finally did. I love this kind of stuff. And when I see things like this I always feel kind of jealous that I’m not the one who came up with the idea. San Francisco filmmaker Brian Emerick gives us this gem of 150 1-second long clips of New York City. He shot it all on a 7D, slowed it down with FCP X, and put a VSCO filter on it. The result is buttery. Watch below–

latest from el mac in denmark

El Mac is at it again, this time going big in Denmark. The piece is titled “Purity of Heart.” I’m loving this Triptych. The image on the left wall is a chromatic negative of the one on the right. So cool. There is also a very cool story behind this piece which Mac shares on his blog:

This was commissioned by Martin Nielsen, who recently renovated this century old orphanage. The murals face a large assisted living facility, and every day I painted I felt an extra sense of obligation to my elderly audience to make something beautiful. I also wanted to paint a powerful, dignified portrait of my friend Dame’s father Fabian, who has been battling cancer for years.
Painting this was an amazing experience. Many thanks to the Nielsen family and Galerie Wolfsen for making this happen. Thanks also, once again, to Ari & Lone for all their help. Thanks to Lacheln & FabianĀ for posing, and to everyone else that showed support.

go skateboarding day recap

Friday was international Go Skateboarding Day. Nike SB celebrated in grand fashion by throwing an NYC skate safari. They shuttled the SB skate team around to a couple of the major NYC skate parks, capping off the day at a custom built skate park that they had constructed on a barge. The barge was parked right next to the Intrepid museum on Friday night. I showed up in time to shoot the demo, before having a little skate session of my own. These are a couple of snaps of the SB team throwing down.

tony hawk’s first skateboard going to the smithsonian

Tony Hawk’s first skateboard, ever, will be going to the Smithsonian. It seems like a pretty fitting place for it. Here is the scoop, from Complex:

After donating his 1986 Tony Hawk pro model Powell-Peralta deck to the Smithsonian Museum of American History back in 2011, skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has just donated his first skateboard ever. The board is a blue Bahne that was handed down to Hawk from his brother Steve around 1977. The wheels are completely rusted and you can barely make out the brand name on the bottom of the deck, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s the skateboard that birthed an icon. The board will officially be handed over on June 22 during the Iconoskate Festival, a celebration of the history, innovation, and creativity of skate culture.

wavegarden 2.0

I remember messing around in wave pools at water parks as a kid, imagining how cool it would be if they could make a wave pool large enough and powerful enough to surf in. Since then, I have read about several such pools. But this one in northern Spain, built by Wavegarden, is blowing my mind. Here is the description of the lagoon in Spain, from their website:

Wavegarden, industry leader in the design and manufacture of wave generation systems, has built a full-sized demo center in Northern Spain. This first of its kind facility will be used strictly for fine-tuning, testing and as a showroom and is not open to the public.

Located at Wavegarden’s research and development site, the new surfing lagoon generates perfectly formed tubing waves that peel for more than 220 m without losing power or shape. It is the longest artificial surfing wave in existence, and the wave quality, shape, and speed, are suitable for the highest levels of performance surfing.

Here is a video of the wave machine in action–

Lykke Li X David Lynch ‘I’m waiting here’ Video

I came across this recently released video today by Lykke Li. Besides being a fan of hers, I was particularly struck by the strong desert imagery in the video. It actually reminded me of some of the locations that I snapped last November in southern NV. I’m not sure if it is nostalgia, or what. But the desert elicits a certain emotional reaction in me that is hard to describe. It is one that I really like.

Anyway, I love the song, and I love the vid. Peep it below

I want this– hush felt pod

I came across this gem on Complex, over the weekend. I love it, and I want one. Here is the lowdown-

If you live in a crowded urban center, you may not even remember the last time you were alone in a space of solitary bliss. Overpopulation is a growing issue on our planet, and to propose a new way of enjoying privacy, British designer Freyja Sewell has envisioned Hush, a felt pod that fits just one. Three years since she first conceived of the design, the private pod is now available for purchase.

Hush is entirely biodegradable, using a single piece of industrial wool felt for its main construction and recycled wool fibers collected from British carpet manufacturers for its internal padding. The environmentally friendly build ensures a positive attitude from its occupant as it provides a private space for work, meditation, a nap, or any casual chilling. Now you can create your own space anywhere by setting up camp in the midst of any busy social activity, but be careful not to become antisocial

Prospect Park Boathouse

I attended a friend’s wedding over the weekend. It was at the Prospect Park Boathouse in Brooklyn. I have been to that park on several occasions (mostly for races), but was completely unaware that the park had a lake and a boathouse. I suppose that I should have known better, since it is like a mini version of Central Park (both parks were designed by the same architect). Anyway, the wedding was beautiful. Here are a couple of snaps that I grabbed from the inside of the boathouse.

DC

I’m in Washington DC this week for work. It has been a while since I have been to this town. It is kind of cool to be here on my own, and just to be able to walk around full on tourist-style. I brought the 5D with a 50mm f/1.8. The sensor is dirty as dirt. Normally I would obsess about that. But for this trip, I don’t really mind. I have been snapping some okayish stuff. I have burned out my phone battery 3 times already just hiking around the district listening to Tribe Called Quest Pandora radio and instagram blitzing. DC is a sexy city. The architecture and concentration of power are two strong contributing factors. I don’t think that I could ever live here. But I have really enjoyed experiencing this city again, for the first time in a long while. And, I have really appreciated being able to do it solo. These are a few of the images that I grabbed on the 5D (which, btw, I was rocking around the neck tourist style). If you are one of the kids who follows my insta garbage, then you will recognize a lot of the vantage points to the crap that I posted on there. Anyway, it feels nice to post my own work on here again occasionally. Enjoy…(or not)

This is probably one of my faves-

The horizon if off in this one, and it needs to be warmed up a bit. But you get the idea.

New indoor installation by Peeta in LDN

Peeta (not to be confused with the animal rights group) recently completed a large indoor mural at the Saddler’s WellsĀ  Theatre in London. I became a fan of Peeta from the first piece of his that I saw. The way that he bends perception between two and three dimensions is pretty fantastic. For this installation, since he was obviously commissioned and limited placement-wise, I don’t think that the full impact of his work really comes through. It is pretty dope, just the same.

JR and Jose Parla ā€œWrinkles of the City, Havana Cubaā€

Stopped by a pretty fantastic art opening last night at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery. It was an exhibit showing the collaboration between JR and Jose Parla that went up recently in Cuba. The project is titled ā€œWrinkles of the City, Havana Cuba.ā€ The show featured large format prints of photos that were taken of the pieces in Cuba. My favorite, is below.

They also installed a large mural on the side of the gallery (below)

Definitely worth checking out.

I want this: Tom Ford Yacht Parka

I’m a fan of most things that Tom Ford does. Additionally, I’m kind of a fiend for outerwear (esp. jackets). So, it is no real surprise that I’m so keen on this new yacht parka that is a part of Tom Ford’s S/S ’13 collection. I want the gingham one. I also wouldn’t mind having a yacht to wear it on, hehe.
