happy friday

As quickly as the snow came, it was gone. Today is 60 degrees and rainy. Mother nature is schizophrenic, I tell you. I guess I am too.

After years of badmouthing all things Mac, I broke down and bought an iPh#$e last night. As much as I love Blackberry, the camera on it just sucks too much to even justify using. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly in love with my new apple device. I still don’t like the touchscreen keyboard. Here are some other changes that I would make (after having used it for about 4 hours, so far):

  • Make the unlock slider half way up the screen so that my thumb doesn’t have to cramp itself when unlocking with one hand.
  • Auto power-down, power-on scheduling. I hate a buzzing phone in the middle of the night.
  • Ability to select different alerts for different mailboxes.
  • Customizable alert profiles (ie, turn off everything but the alarm clock and calendar alerts)

Maybe these are already functions that are available? I haven’t read the manual, yet. I meant to bring it on the train with me this morning, but forgot.

Anyway, I am now officially on instagram (though I have yet to post anything). In case you would like to be friends, I’m “shotbyjake.” Have a great weekend!

  1. Welcome to the iphone and insta club! Although you probably hate to hear that 🙂

I’m still smitten my this bird photo. Its so amazing and I can’t get over it!

  2. A friend of mine once told me that if you put your phone on “airplane mode” that it will block out any incoming calls/messages, but your alarms will still go off. Then the messages and missed calls will appear when you switch it back to the “normal mode” in the morning. I never tried it, but I figured I’d suggest it for you to try!

  3. Check out the airplane mode. It blocks out calls and msgs. I got used to the touch screen after a few weeks. I love my iphone now.

  4. I had to speak up because I do #3 on your list– I only get alerts from my calendar and the alarm clock. In Notification Center you can control what kinds of notifications you get for every app. For nighttime if you don’t want to be disturbed by calls or texts but you want the alarm to go off in the morning, make sure the ringer is all the way up (the physical buttons on the top left side) but then toggle the physical mute button down so red is showing. Make sure Silent Vibrate is off in the Sounds menu and you’re all set! I don’t like getting any push notifications (even email) and I only manage my work email with the Mail app, so I’m not sure how much alert customization is possible in mail.

I love your photography, can’t wait to see what you can do in Instagram!

  5. if you really hate the touch keyboard, you should check out some of the accessory keyboards out there- I can’t say that I’ve had any first-hand experience with them, but I saw a bluetooth case/keyboard the other day that looked like it had potential. Maybe it was at brookstone…
