shooting w/kate

Despite the pervasive rainy weather this week, Tuesday night actually ended up being amazing weather. As I mentioned earlier, I shot some stuff with a lady DJ friend of mine that evening. Most of the looks were inside, but we also had a location set planned. So, I was a bit nervous when I woke up Tuesday morning with sheets of rain pounding on the windows. But by the end of the day the sun was out and it was almost 70 degrees.

As soon as I deliver the images, I’ll post a proper set of my faves on shotbyjake.com/latest.

It has already been a very busy week for me. That’s kinda good, because it makes the weekend arrive quickly. I rode my bike to work for the first time this year on Monday. It was a bit on the chilly side, which left tears streaming past both of my temples during the entire ride. I made a note to bring glasses next time. Since Monday, it has either been pouring rain in the morning (Tues), or else supposed to rain in the evening (Wed). The forecast for the remainder of the week isn’t looking so dry, either. But, when it does dry up I’m happy to finally have a short enough ride that I can wear nice clothes on the ride without getting them all sweaty. Gripping, I know.

I shot with one of my favorite lady DJs last night. It went very well and I’m pretty stoked about what we came away with. Also, this happened. Good times. Enjoy the rain!

I had a very productive evening Friday, and day Saturday. I met some very cool people. The only downside is that it is a bit on the cool side, weather-wise. I wasn’t really expecting that. So, I was wearing a light jacket for the Times Sq. event that I was shooting Friday night. I found myself literally shivering by the time that it wrapped. I have a bit of a thing lately for photographing birds in flight. I snapped the one above on Saturday morning from my bedroom window. The one below was in Times Square on Friday night.

Speaking of birds in flight, I finally figured out a time to go visit my sister in Alaska. I’ll be headed there for the whole week of the 4th of July. I’m very excited about it.

A bit sooner than that I will be traveling to Chicago to visit my Friends there one last time before they move to Atl. That little jaunt will actually be occurring this coming weekend. Also very excited about that one.

Sunday morning, I’ll be racing the “Run as One” 4m in CP. At the suggestion of a friend, I think that I’m going to make it a thing, now– to just start running from my house when I have a race in CP. I figure, why not? Especially since it was surprisingly invigorating last weekend, after I realized that I wasn’t going to miss the race. I’ll just plan on giving my self a little bit of an extra time cushion in the morning. That’s all.

a couple of more from last week

These are a couple of additional images from last week that I liked. Also, these were published on Friday.

I’m really enjoying the weekend so far. I had a lot of fun on Friday night, and the weather on Saturday was gorgeous. I know it is a long shot, but if the rain can just hold off until after the race Sunday morning I would basically be completely content.

I have been doing a lot more writing with pen and paper, these days. Although I don’t ride the subway nearly as much as I used to, I have two long rides on the weekends now since a few weeks ago. It is easy to get a seat on the weekend. So Instead of reading mags or whatever, I have been bleeding out ink while sitting on the train. It turns out that I have a lot to say when I know that no one will ever read it. Since the time that I started writing this post, a monsoon has begun outside my window. So much for no rain at the race, hehe.

é seixta novamente

Yesterday I shot the new A.P.C. store in the West Village. It is a very cool space. They had an opening party last night, which is always good times. I’m sure that I would have enjoyed it more had it not been the culmination of a series of crazy days. Even such, it was enjoyable. I was able to go home directly afterward and finally get a solid night of sleep. I really liked the way that the above sequence came out. This one’s mine, too.

Some good stuff on tap for the weekend, including a race in CP on Sunday. Looking forward to decompressing a bit and hanging out with the peeps I like. Have a great weekend.

this ‘n’ that

I wanted to post these moodyish shots from the weekend. Sunday evening I was able to just chill for a bit near the water to watch the helicopters come and go.

I also want to write a bit about running. A few weeks ago (seven, to be exact) I wrote about about how I was going to be in shape in six weeks. Wellahhhh, I’m not exactly there, but have made a lot of progress. Last weekend, I finished my first double digits run of the year, and felt great afterward. I followed up with 4 the next day and had no problem keeping the pace right around 7mm. I haven’t been as consistent as I would like to be. But I think that with the weather getting nicer, it will be a lot easier. So there is my positive little note to accompany these moody photos.

the post office

I snapped this shot with my phone on the way to the subway yesterday morning. I’m having a lot of existential thoughts/feelings lately. Perhaps because of that, this is a really powerful image to me at the moment.

Shifting gears– The weather is beautiful today. The sky is blue and I didn’t need a jacket this morning. Simple pleasures can be clutch.

tommy x club monaco

This week, street style icon Tommy Ton celebrated the launch of his collaboration with Club Monaco at the CM flagship in the Flatiron district. I totally idolize this dude. I drool over basically every shot that he posts on Jak and Jil. The event was chill and a lot of my friends were there. It was a nice distraction from the complete chaos going on in my person life at the moment. Here are a few additional shots–

arnette ‘dibs’

One bonus of daylight savings is that there is some daylight left after the market close in the evening. Wednesday evening I worked with the peeps from RC on a shoot for a new model of Arnette glasses. We did the shoot at the newish skate part in Chelsea. It was the first time that I had been inside since it was built. I was so bummed that I didn’t have skate shoes with me. The park is super nice. The model/athlete is Pat [something]. His instagram is @_path. One more shot below–

retna mural on houston x bowery

Retna is the latest to grace the Bowery mural space with his artwork. He just wrapped up the piece Tuesday night. I made it over there right after sunset, as the lights were coming on. A few additional looks below. Before Retna was Faile, then JR, etc., etc…

happy march and happy friday, also return of the a train poems

It has been kind of a gloomy last couple of days, around town. But I have been insanely busy, with hardly any time to notice. Despite all of that, I was able to sneak in a few quick runs during the week. Our first race of the season is actually Sunday morning. Luckily it is in our neighborhood. So, we won’t have to stand around freezing in the park forever, before it starts.

One of the things that I worked on this week, was snapping some images (above and below) of the new Rothman’s space near Union Square. It is a NYC born and bred men’s clothing store that has been around for almost a century. It is a really cool space. I just wish that the weather would have cooperated, so that we could have had better light.

Here is a quick and dirty A train poem to kick off the weekend:

Chambers, Canal– here we go. ‘E’ across the platform at West 4th, some jackass holds the doors. 14th approaches, device alerts sounding in synchronization. Penn, Times, 59th, time to zone out.  125 arrives, Harlem proper. 145th— “’D’ on the lower level” a voice shouts. 168– Columbia Hospital and the place where they shot X dead. GW Port Authority, almost theres. 181, detrain and hit the stairs.

lets chat about gear for a sec

Happy leap day! This is kind of a random post. But, I want to chat about some new gear I have been excited about, lately. You may recall that my apartment was burgled earlier this year. One of the few things that was actually stolen was my mid-sized camera backpack. I was so bummed about it. It was the perfect size for quick gigs that required a couple of lenses and simple lighting, but not the whole kit and caboodle.

So, I was really stoked when Incase hooked me up with their new SLR pack. I have been using it for everything. Check out my write up about it over on HS.

Speaking of gear, Canon is set to announce the newest edition of the 5D, later this week. I am super excited about this, and cannot wait to order one.

nyfw is all upons

I’m kind of freaking out that Fashion Week is already here again. It is going to be a little bit different for me this week, than it has been in the past. I can’t just duck out of the day job for the duration and shoot everything that I feel like. Nope. In fact, I will probably only be covering a handful of shows. I’m excited, just the same. I’m most looking forward to Band of Outsiders on Saturday.

As a side note, my 7D had it’s first error on Saturday night. It was the dreaded “err 30.” It is an error that happens when the shutter gets stuck open. After doing a lot of reading on Canon forums, I gave the camera a solid smack, then took the battery out, and reinstalled it. It appears to be working like normal again. Phew! I feel like it is pretty amazing that I have gone this long without having any errors. The shutter has well over 50k actuations, and I haven’t had it serviced a single time. I think that I may have to drop her off for a tune-up, once FW is out of the way.

happy friday

It has been a busy week. I’m so glad that the weekend is finally here. A few highlights from the last couple of days are:

1. My Olloclip arrived in the mail. I ordered one after reading about it in wired. The image above was one of the first ones that I snapped, while using it. Incidentally, this week I read an article in Wired about Instagram. It made me feel a little better about myself, hahaha.

2. Honest people rule. Yesterday I received a mystery paypal deposit. I was a bit nervous, at first. When I checked into it a bit more, I realized it was from a dude in the UK who I had licensed some photos to in May of 2010 for his postcard biz. A welcome surprise. I had basically just written off getting paid for that one.

Have a great weekend.

happy friday

This took me a little longer than I had anticipated, to make. So, it’s kind of late. But it is still January, so whatev. Here is a little video slideshow recap of our 2011.

Have a great weekend!
