w-end recap

This past weekend may have been the pinnacle of spring weather, as far as weekends go in NYC. The temperature was perfect. The sun was out. The breeze was delightful. Fortuitously, I was able to spend a solid chunk of my time outdoors enjoying it.

Saturday morning was the Healthy Kidney 10k. It wasn’t a great race for me. But, here are my results anyway.

Sunday, I opted out of running the Japan Day race to head upstate and get an early jump on my Sunday morning family time. It was definitely time well spent.

When I arrived back in the city on Sunday afternoon, the weather was so nice that I had to get back out there. So, I put on my sneaks and did some distance work. It was one of those 2 for 1 days. I was able to work on my vitamin D levels and workout the legs at the same time, hehe. I ended up knocking out 14 miles, and got a little bit of color on my nose. If nothing else it was a little confidence booster for next Saturday’s half-mara.

I took a quick nap after the jog and then headed out with my friend Sam to shoot some board shorts. Ultimately we are going to have to do it again on a different day, because the stupid clouds rolled in Sunday eve. It kind of spoiled the look that I was going for. But here is one anyway, from the throw-away session–

Have a great week!

happy friday

Happy Friday, I guess. Normally I really love the weekend. But, this weekend I’m struggling with a few items. Most of my friends are bouncing (home to visit their mothers, else to Costa Rica [else they live in Florence]). So there is that. Then there is the unbloggable stuff :/. Not unlike instagram, I [once loathed, but now] have apparently started to embrace emoticons. Mostly likely it is because all of my favorite ones involve commas and/or dollar signs. Money and tears– that’s all you need to make rap songs and emoticons.

In less lame news, I perused the private preview of the latest Opera Gallery exhibit on Thursday night (detail of ‘circulations of a linear lust’ by Augustine Kofie, above). Some of my fave artists were on display (including B*nksy). I also met Ron English, which was dope.

Finally: true love does exist. I realized that when I was going through the photos from last weekend. Look at the photo below by Jeni Bell. I gave her a quick crash course on how to use an SLR via the “focus/recompose” method of shooting. I think that it is pretty obvious by this photo that she only has eyes for one gent (the same one that she has been with for like 15 years, now). Have an amazing Mother’s Day weekend.

Also, this went up Monday. And I posted something over here, today.

happy friday

This week flew by for me. I’ll be headed to Chi Town tonight, and I’m pretty excited about it. Just hoping that the T-storms predicted for this evening won’t interfere with my flight. I won’t be doing any running this weekend. In fact, I probably won’t be doing anything that requires very much effort. This went up on Tuesday. Have a great weekend!

weekend recap

Sunday was an incredibly productive day. I woke up super early and ran to the park for the race. It was the same 4 mile course as last week. I finished 4 seconds slower than last week, hahaha. I wasn’t able to linger after the race and hangout with my friends, like I normally enjoy doing. I motored up to Westchester for some quality family time. Upon returning to the city, I stopped through B&H to pick up some stuff for a shoot that I have lined up this week. Afterward, I rolled down to SoHo for a bit of shopping.

Nixon came out with two new styles of watches with canvas bracelets. When I first saw them announced last month, I was pretty excited to pick one (some) up. I have been calling the Burton store for a couple of weeks waiting for them to be in stock. They finally got them in as of yesterday. I grabbed a “Mellor” (which I snapped a shot of, above). I also picked up a white “Quad.” I’m pretty amped about both of them.

After SoHo, I walked a bit south still for some location scouting in TriBeCa. Pretty excited about the options that I came up with. I was able to catch a quick round of Rock Band at my friend’s pad before heading home in time to catch the sunset. Hoping for a great week.

sats

I had a very productive evening Friday, and day Saturday. I met some very cool people. The only downside is that it is a bit on the cool side, weather-wise. I wasn’t really expecting that. So, I was wearing a light jacket for the Times Sq. event that I was shooting Friday night. I found myself literally shivering by the time that it wrapped. I have a bit of a thing lately for photographing birds in flight. I snapped the one above on Saturday morning from my bedroom window. The one below was in Times Square on Friday night.

Speaking of birds in flight, I finally figured out a time to go visit my sister in Alaska. I’ll be headed there for the whole week of the 4th of July. I’m very excited about it.

A bit sooner than that I will be traveling to Chicago to visit my Friends there one last time before they move to Atl. That little jaunt will actually be occurring this coming weekend. Also very excited about that one.

Sunday morning, I’ll be racing the “Run as One” 4m in CP. At the suggestion of a friend, I think that I’m going to make it a thing, now– to just start running from my house when I have a race in CP. I figure, why not? Especially since it was surprisingly invigorating last weekend, after I realized that I wasn’t going to miss the race. I’ll just plan on giving my self a little bit of an extra time cushion in the morning. That’s all.

happy friday

I have been tapped by HS to cover Nike’s NFL draft events this weekend. As a result, I will be rocking my new Fuel Band. So, I’ll let you know how that goes. Or, you can follow @highsnobiety on instagram to get some up to the minute action this evening and tomorrow. Here is a shot of my virigin dashboard below.

In addition to the draft activities this weekend, I have another race on Sunday morning. I will also be location scouting for an upcoming shoot that I’m pretty excited about. The weather is supposed to cooperate for all of the above. So, I’m kind of excited to get this weekend going. Have a good one.

weekend recap

Above –^ is what most of the day looked like on Sunday. However, there was a sweet spot in the early AM when the rain Gods spared 7000+ runners a wet and miserable race.

Sort of funny story (in retrospect)– The race started at 8. So, I was going to try to be at the CP band shell by 7:30 to pick up my #/ locate some friends, and casually make my way to the starting line. I was standing on the C train platform in Penn by 5 after 7. This should have given me scads of time to accomplish all of the previously stated activities. After waiting for 20 mins for the train (and having none in sight all of the way down the tunnel), I started to panic a bit. I didn’t bring anything with me but a metrocard, or else I would have just grabbed a cab. I decided that it would probably take the same amount of time to walk back to the apt. and get cash/jump in a cab, as it would to just run to CP. So I opted for a 2.5 mile warm up, hahahaha. There was hardly any traffic on 8th Ave. So, I just rocked the bus lane all of the way uptown. I arrived at the registration tent just in time to slap on my number while walking to the start chute. All things told, it worked out perfectly. Here are my stats–

In the post finish I ran into all of my teammates and a bunch of other homeys that I hadn’t seen for a long time. We exchanged sweaty hugs and chatted until we were shivering before dispersing to our respective destinations. It was raining by the time that I came back above ground 25 blocks later. Bonus= the apples were delicious.

a couple of more from last week

These are a couple of additional images from last week that I liked. Also, these were published on Friday.

I’m really enjoying the weekend so far. I had a lot of fun on Friday night, and the weather on Saturday was gorgeous. I know it is a long shot, but if the rain can just hold off until after the race Sunday morning I would basically be completely content.

I have been doing a lot more writing with pen and paper, these days. Although I don’t ride the subway nearly as much as I used to, I have two long rides on the weekends now since a few weeks ago. It is easy to get a seat on the weekend. So Instead of reading mags or whatever, I have been bleeding out ink while sitting on the train. It turns out that I have a lot to say when I know that no one will ever read it. Since the time that I started writing this post, a monsoon has begun outside my window. So much for no rain at the race, hehe.

é seixta novamente

Yesterday I shot the new A.P.C. store in the West Village. It is a very cool space. They had an opening party last night, which is always good times. I’m sure that I would have enjoyed it more had it not been the culmination of a series of crazy days. Even such, it was enjoyable. I was able to go home directly afterward and finally get a solid night of sleep. I really liked the way that the above sequence came out. This one’s mine, too.

Some good stuff on tap for the weekend, including a race in CP on Sunday. Looking forward to decompressing a bit and hanging out with the peeps I like. Have a great weekend.

monday

The past weekend was one of the weirdest Easter weekends that I can remember. Overall it was positive. The weather was fantastic the entire time. Even though I missed a race that I had registered for, I did end up getting some running done. I was also able to hangout with some good friends who were in town from Texas. I was busy enough that I didn’t really have any time to shoot anything interesting (hence another iPhone photo). But I did get off to a quick start this week– shooting some promo shots of a clothing store in the VW, this morning. Here’s hoping for a good week.

happy march and happy friday, also return of the a train poems

It has been kind of a gloomy last couple of days, around town. But I have been insanely busy, with hardly any time to notice. Despite all of that, I was able to sneak in a few quick runs during the week. Our first race of the season is actually Sunday morning. Luckily it is in our neighborhood. So, we won’t have to stand around freezing in the park forever, before it starts.

One of the things that I worked on this week, was snapping some images (above and below) of the new Rothman’s space near Union Square. It is a NYC born and bred men’s clothing store that has been around for almost a century. It is a really cool space. I just wish that the weather would have cooperated, so that we could have had better light.

Here is a quick and dirty A train poem to kick off the weekend:

Chambers, Canal– here we go. ‘E’ across the platform at West 4th, some jackass holds the doors. 14th approaches, device alerts sounding in synchronization. Penn, Times, 59th, time to zone out.  125 arrives, Harlem proper. 145th— “’D’ on the lower level” a voice shouts. 168– Columbia Hospital and the place where they shot X dead. GW Port Authority, almost theres. 181, detrain and hit the stairs.

happy friday

I wish that the weather today was like in the image above. But, as far as February weather goes, I can’t really complain. I did break through my funk of outdoor running yesterday morning and it was gorgeous. I went with two friends, which made it even more enjoyable. I planned on doing the same again this morning, until I woke up at 5 AM to the sound of rain pounding on our windows. It would have been nice to have 2 good runs in a row.

I had all of these intentions of being in shape by today. Six weeks ago, I set a goal to have the winter body blah under control. I went to the gym very consistently for like 2 weeks, then I started to get too “busy.” I wouldn’t say that I’m worse shape than I was when I made the goal. But I also haven’t really made any measurable progress.

I’m not going to kid myself and pretend that I’m going to have any amazing workouts this weekend. But starting Monday, I’m going to reset the 6 week clock. I’m crossing my fingers!

happy friday

It has been a busy week. I’m so glad that the weekend is finally here. A few highlights from the last couple of days are:

1. My Olloclip arrived in the mail. I ordered one after reading about it in wired. The image above was one of the first ones that I snapped, while using it. Incidentally, this week I read an article in Wired about Instagram. It made me feel a little better about myself, hahaha.

2. Honest people rule. Yesterday I received a mystery paypal deposit. I was a bit nervous, at first. When I checked into it a bit more, I realized it was from a dude in the UK who I had licensed some photos to in May of 2010 for his postcard biz. A welcome surprise. I had basically just written off getting paid for that one.

Have a great weekend.

happy friday

As quickly as the snow came, it was gone. Today is 60 degrees and rainy. Mother nature is schizophrenic, I tell you. I guess I am too.

After years of badmouthing all things Mac, I broke down and bought an iPh#$e last night. As much as I love Blackberry, the camera on it just sucks too much to even justify using. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly in love with my new apple device. I still don’t like the touchscreen keyboard. Here are some other changes that I would make (after having used it for about 4 hours, so far):

  • Make the unlock slider half way up the screen so that my thumb doesn’t have to cramp itself when unlocking with one hand.
  • Auto power-down, power-on scheduling. I hate a buzzing phone in the middle of the night.
  • Ability to select different alerts for different mailboxes.
  • Customizable alert profiles (ie, turn off everything but the alarm clock and calendar alerts)

Maybe these are already functions that are available? I haven’t read the manual, yet. I meant to bring it on the train with me this morning, but forgot.

Anyway, I am now officially on instagram (though I have yet to post anything). In case you would like to be friends, I’m “shotbyjake.” Have a great weekend!

happy friday

Even though this was a short week, because of the holiday on Monday, it has seemed like one of the longest weeks ever. It is probably just because I’m trying to get into my new routine (which is a lot more boring than my old one). Anyway, I’m very glad that the weekend has finally arrived. I had a few minutes to flip through my reader this morning (which has been piling up), and I found these images of some very cool new work by SatOne (above). The image is from his “Chromolog” canvas series. Check out the rest over here.

for the new year…

I have gone “full Brooklyn” with my facial hair (or full state trooper, depending on the glasses I’m wearing).

Ok, maybe not for the full new year. But at least for the party tomorrow night. Happy New Year!!

Merry Xmas

I have traditionally been one of those grinchy types when it comes to this time of year. Christmas/New Years would just stress me out because of all of the traveling and the drain on the bank account. I have to say that this year I’m really looking forward to things. We didn’t do cards this year (which was a huge load off). We aren’t traveling until after the new year. And when we do it will be for snowboarding. Even though we have a lot of things planned for both weekends, they aren’t stressful things. Have a happy and mellow Christmas!

weekend recap– arnette and other good stuff

I hate to talk about the weather. Because it always seems petty or boring. But, growing up in a place that has four seasons, there are certain sentiments connected to the cold weather (as with the other seasons). The only thing that I can really compare it to, would be something like those instances where you step into the elevator with someone wearing the same perfume that your first girlfriend wore. Although, I don’t think that anyone really wears Liz Claiborne anymore. Not sure if it even exists anymore, hahaha. Anyway, the first really couple of cold days in winter have a similar effect on me. This was that weekend, for me. The temps dipped into the subfreezing range and jackets were no longer optional when making a run to the corner bodega.

Speaking of good times in the winter months, this weekend we booked a snowboarding trip for January. This will my be first trip dedicated entirely to riding, in longer than I would like to admit.

Arnette just launched a couple of new frames. One of them, “Glory Daze” (above) I shot with my homey Sam on Sunday morning. It isn’t the first time that Sam has agreed to model eyewear for me. I have to say that the story, this time around was a lot more fun. Enjoy a few more images, below.

Have a great week!

new fott vid– ‘motorcycle. better than breakfast’

This video was the perfect start to my Friday. The Video is by Fott, called ‘Motorcycle. Better than Breakfast.’ The title sums it up. I doubt that there are many red-blooded males out there who would choose shoveling down some oatmeal over blasting around a pre-dawn Moscow atop a cafe racer before morning rush hour. If that was my breakfast, I would eat breakfast every day. Anyway, check out the vid.

PS: My brother arrived safe and sound this morning. He also brought along his lady friend, who I was able to meet for the first time this morning. I think it is going to be a good weekend.
